For thirty or more years I was an architectural photographer documenting the work of architects throughout the county. I photographed hundreds of structures of all sizes and shapes from gazebos deep in the woods to soaring skyscrapers in our biggest cities. I retired somewhat early and nowadays when remembering these places and spaces I have developed a more abstract memory of them. Photographing architecture can be a game of patience or a frenetic period of time rushing to catch the setting sun. Events like these leave lasting impressions and form the memories about them. It is interesting how far from the truth the visual proof of a building can become. Now I think of architecture that I photographed in more expressionistic/organic terms and the images I recall have softened with time. To describe my thoughts in photographic terms I have turned to nature -- in particular lichen, moss, larch and fall leaves thrown way out of focus to produce both a soft and sharp dreamlike image that seems to capture the essence of the built environment.
